Peak Season, Peak Flavor: August’s Top 5!

Still recovering from July’s heat waves? You’re not alone—and luckily, August comes bearing gifts. While the temps may still be high, so is the flavor! Farmers’ markets are full of sweet, juicy produce that only shows up this time of year. Whether you’re shopping local or growing your own, we’ve got 5 fruits and veggies you don’t want to miss this month—plus easy ways to enjoy them while staying cool!

1. Peaches

Juicy, fragrant, and full of late-summer magic. Eat them fresh, slice them over yogurt, grill them for a smoky twist–honestly I’ve never actually done that, but I’ve always wanted to try–, or freeze for smoothies later–my kid’s personal favorite! Check out our blog from last year to learn more about peaches.

How to pick: Look for golden undertones (not green), and a little give when gently squeezed.

2. Tomatoes

August is the true tomato season in CT. Nothing beats the taste of a sun-ripened tomato—especially heirlooms–or cherry tomatoes. I’m still patiently waiting for my tomatoes this year…Have you had any luck yet?

Try this: Tomato toast with olive oil and flaky salt, or toss with basil and mozzarella for a quick caprese.

3. Sweet Corn

Corn is at its sweetest right now—perfect raw–yes raw, thanks Amanda for teaching me that!–, grilled, boiled, or shaved into salads.

Tip: Use it the day you buy it for maximum sweetness (sugar turns to starch the longer it sits). I just learned this recently as I was always waiting to use it a couple days after I purchased it. But it truly makes a difference!

4. Watermelon

Is it even August without watermelon? It’s hydrating, kid-approved, and endlessly versatile. Learn how to pick the perfect watermelon from our blog last year!

Ideas: Cube and freeze for a popsicle alternative, blend with mint and lime for a refreshing drink, OR better yet – muddle up some watermelon for a watermelon margarita.

5. Cucumbers

Cool, crunchy, and easy to snack on. Slice into water, dip in hummus, or turn into quick pickles.

Bonus: Try different smaller “snacking” varieties if you see them at the farmers’ market!

So before summer starts to wind down, soak up the best of the season, one bite at a time! These August favorites won’t be around forever, and there's nothing like enjoying them at their freshest. Whether you're slicing peaches for breakfast, tossing tomatoes into dinner, or shaking up some watermelon margaritas, let the farmers’ market (and the season) inspire what ends up on your plate!
