Modern Milkman!

When most people hear the word “milkman,” they automatically think back to the 1950s: glass bottles, doorstep delivery, and tin milk boxes. Well, what if I told you that the milkman is still a thing? Yep, that’s right! Here in Connecticut, there are multiple locations where the Modern Milkman delivers fresh milk and more right to your doorstep!

What is the Modern Milkman?

Just what it sounds like! The Modern Milkman is a modern twist on the traditional milkman that we think of from the 1950s, but better! It is owned and operated by Oakridge Dairy in Ellington, CT. Their motto is “fresh from the farm, delivery to your home,” giving the community the highest quality of products. To learn more about the history of the Modern Milkman, click here.

It’s a Game Changer!

My family and I have had our Modern Milkman subscription for a little less than a year now, and it has honestly been a game changer! The convenience of regular delivery makes the chaos of grocery shopping for a family of four so much easier. We originally started with a half share which got us three items. However, we quickly realized that 3 items just wasn’t enough for our milk hungry children! Since the glass bottles of fresh milk only come by the half gallon, we need two each week. A full share for a family of four has been perfect!

We typically get two bottles of milk, a bread choice (bagels, or a sliced loaf), eggs, and then switch up the last items! Some of our family favorites include: coffee milk (SO GOOD!), chips & salsa, the newest Boars Head deli options, granola of the week, and the muffins. Many of the products have “flavors of the week,” which my family always gets so excited about. Each Wednesday, my kids wait in anticipation to see what flavor of bagels they’ll get - they love the french toast flavor the best! With these flavored products (granola, cottage cheese dips, yogurt, & bagels) I seriously have not had one that I disliked.

They also have some additional products that you add on to your weekly order for an extra three to four dollars. Some of these items include: ground beef, peanut butter, pizza, cold brew coffee, kettle corn, bacon, hot dogs, and more! My kids absolutely love the hotdogs, and my personal favorite is combining the cold brew coffee with the coffee milk- YUM!

Though the price of the weekly subscription tends to be one to three dollars more than I would probably spend at the grocery store, it is still completely worth it. The convenience alone has been hugely beneficial for our -sometimes chaotic- household. Also, knowing that we are supporting our local farms while getting the highest quality products is something that I wouldn’t trade for the world.

Just follow these easy steps to get the full Modern Milkman experience:

  1. Choose your subscription size: half share, full share, or family share.

  2. Pick your weekly choices from a large selection of products: New selections can be made each week. You just have to make your changes/add additional products 24 hours prior to your next delivery day.

  3. Receive your selected products at your doorstep every week and leave your previously used bottles out for them to pick up! - It’s super convenient, and they will communicate with you exactly where pick up/drop off is in your initial sign up. For example, our family has our drop off right in front of our garage versus the actual front steps.
