Using SNAP at Farmers’ Markets

Finally, Spring is in the air!

With spring in the air…. we all know what that means…. farmers’ markets!

Here at Stanton Marketing, we really love farmers’ markets.
We love going to farmers’ markets
We love talking about farmers’ markets
We love sharing information about farmers’ markets… and we want to share this important piece with you—
Did you know that you can support local farmers AND can get amazing local food for you and your family with your SNAP card?

Did you also know that in 2023 alone, there were roughly 90 farms in CT that accepted SNAP?!

The main items you can buy with your SNAP card at the grocery store, can all be found at a local farmers’ market as well, such as:

  • Fruits

  • Vegetables

  • Meat (beef, pork, fish, poultry)

  • Dairy products

  • Breads (loafs, granola, bagels, ect.)

Almost all farmers’ markets in the state are affiliated with the Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program (FMNP) which serves participants of Women, Infant, and Children (WIC) and seniors who are over the age of 60 and meet income eligibility guidelines with checks to purchase fresh fruits, vegetables, cut herbs and honey.

When you visit a farmers’ market, bring your EBT card to the table with the sign that says "SNAP/EBT accepted here '' at participating farmers' markets and farm stands. You will swipe your card for the amount that you want and will be given Market Tokens that can be used at all the stands at that market. Some farmers markets will “double the value” of your SNAP money, meaning that for every $1 of SNAP money you have they will give you $2 to spend at the farmers market.

Does having fresh produce give you inspiration to try and grow your own? SNAP also allows you to purchase seeds and plants to grow your own food to eat? Yep! You read that right! You can try and grow your own produce & herbs right at home with the help of SNAP!

>> Check out the Connecticut NOFA Local Farm and Food Guide where you can search for markets by county, by the acceptance of SNAP, CSA options, benefit doubling and more! <<

The Stanton Marketing team hopes you have a great 2024 farmers’ market season!
