National Agriculture Month!

March feels like the longest month ever—winter’s not quite gone, spring’s not really here, and the days just seem to drag on forever. Something March does have to offer though? National Agriculture Month!

Okay…so what is National Agriculture Month?

Celebrated in March, National Agriculture Month in Connecticut recognizes the vital role agriculture plays in the state's economy, environment, and communities. With over 5,500 farms contributing nearly $4 billion annually to the economy, Connecticut’s agricultural sector ranges from dairy and poultry to fruits, vegetables, and aquaculture. This month serves as an opportunity to recognize the hard work of farmers, promote locally grown products, and educate the public about sustainable farming practices. Events, farm tours, and educational programs help connect people with local agriculture, and reinforce the importance of supporting Connecticut’s farms!

Supporting local farms in Connecticut can be done in many ways…let’s check out some of the options to support:

  • Shopping at farmers' markets, where people can buy seasonal produce, dairy, meats, and artisanal goods directly from local farmers.

  • Joining a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program is another great option, allowing individuals to receive fresh, farm-grown products regularly while providing farmers with financial support.

  • Dining at farm-to-table restaurants that source ingredients locally also helps sustain small farms.

  • Visiting pick-your-own farms for fruits like apples, berries, and pumpkins is a fun and interactive way to support local agriculture.

  • Advocating for local farms by spreading awareness, attending agricultural fairs, or even volunteering at community farms.

  • Choosing Connecticut-grown products at grocery stores and supporting agricultural initiatives and policies ensure that local farms continue to thrive.

As of March 9, 2025, several farmers markets in Connecticut are operating, offering fresh local produce and goods. Check out some of the options!

Please note that market times and dates can change, so it's advisable to check the respective websites or contact the markets directly for the most current information.

The observance of National Agriculture Month serves as a reminder of the interconnectedness of agriculture and everyday life in Connecticut! It emphasizes the importance of supporting local farms and understanding the challenges they face, such as climate change and market fluctuations. By participating in this month-long celebration, you can gain a deeper appreciation for the agriculture around you and its contributions to the state's identity, economy, and overall well-being.
