Berry Excited Series - Blackberries!

Up next on our Berry Excited Series, none other than the blackberry! While blackberries may not be as popular as strawberries and blueberries, these berries are another delicious option that are harvested in the months of June and July.

  • Blackberries are packed with anthocyanins and known to be a very healthy food!

  • They are also known as “black caps!”

  • 1 cup of blackberries is about 62 calories (states the USDA)

  • Unripe berries will not ripen after being picked (so remember to pick plump, firm, full blackberries!)

  • The ancient Greeks believed that blackberries could cure diseases of the mouth and throat as well as prevent ailments like gout.

  • Blackberry leaves were once used as an early hair dye.

  • Blackberries typically only last a couple of days in the refrigerator and will quickly mold when left at room temperature → so eat them quickly!

  • Blackberries can last for months if you freeze them! - Just wash, cut the hulls, and put them into a ziplock bag (with as much air removed as possible!)
