CT Agricultural Fairs!

Fair season is in full swing here in Connecticut! Something about fair season to kick off the fall just gives me all the feels. The crisp change in weather, cozy sweaters, delicious food, and fun for the family! Read on to learn about some fun facts about the local fairs here in CT.

Types of Agricultural Fairs

Did you know that there are actually three different types of agricultural fairs in CT? That’s right, three! Here’s a little information from the CT Grown Website about the three different types of fairs in CT:

County Fairs:  County fairs date back decades, sometimes centuries, and are probably what you’re most familiar with. These fairs typically stretch over a few days and offer a variety of agricultural contests & shows, live entertainment, and sometimes even rides! They are oftentimes put together to raise money for a certain purpose by local community organizations.

4-H Fairs: These unique fairs showcase local agriculture organized by a youth development program overseen by the University of Connecticut.

Grange Fairs: Originally, The Grange was founded as an agricultural advocacy organization. Though it has evolved over the years addressing the needs of non-farm families and other community needs, its main focus is still activities on agriculture.

What Should We Expect at the Fairs?

Opportunity to Learn: Some fairs have demonstrations of their work in action like milking cows or watching a hatchery. Fairs will sometimes have educational presentations targeted for children about farms and food. Most importantly, agricultural fairs allow you the opportunity to interact with your local farmers.

Shows & Contests: Got a competitive side? Well, a lot of the CT fairs have shows and contests that showcase things from fresh farm vegetables, to animal exhibits that allow visitors to get up close and personal to them! Some commonly featured animals include cows, goats, chicken, sheep, rabbits, and horses.

Fun, Fun, Fun!: Rides and games aren’t the only fun part about fairs.  In fact, there are so many quirky contests that fairs encourage their visitors to take part in! For example, one contest that has been gaining popularity over the past few years is “vegetable racing.” No, you didn’t hear me wrong- vegetable racing! This contest involves participants to pick a locally grown vegetable, add wheels and other modifications, and try to get the fastest time down a curved track. Sign me up! Some other fun contests include obstacle courses for livestock, corn shucking contests, pig racing, and hay bale throwing competitions.
