Maple Sugaring Season!

This weekend (March 16th & 17th), The Maple Syrup Producers Association of Connecticut will hold their annual celebration of sugaring season for Maple Weekend. In celebration of Maple Weekend, many sugarhouses across the state will be open for tours and selling various products. This is a perfect opportunity for people in the community to learn about how maple syrup is produced, sample various maple products, and tour a sugarhouse!

Maple Syrup in Connecticut

According to the USDA, there are almost 200 farms producing more than 17,000 gallons of syrup a year in Connecticut. Even though sugaring is not typically a full-time profession here in Connecticut, we still rank 10th among maple producing states.

Maple sugar season typically takes place early February through late March due to the mixture of warmer days and freezing nights. However, producers have to make preparations well in advance such as deciding which maple trees to tap and also collect plenty of firewood for the sugarhouse.

During these winter months, many of Connecticut’s sugarhouses are open to the public, inviting people to learn about how maple sap is converted to syrup as well as purchase the maple products available for sale.

Other Maple Products!

Though maple syrup is what we typically think of as the primary product from maple sap, there are so many other items that are produced each year! Some of these products include: maple sugar, maple cream, and maple candy. Additionally, sometimes maple producers partner up with other farms in Connecticut to create delicious CT Grown foods like maple-flavored milk, yogurt, jams, and jellies!

Whether you’re a maple lover like me, or just want to learn more about the maple process, head over to The Maple Syrup Producers Association of CT where all of your questions can be answered!
